RBI releases sectoral bank credit data
(11:01, 01 Oct 2026)
The Reserve Bank of India reported data concerning the sectoral allocation of bank credit for August 2026, compiled from 41 select scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) representing approximately 95 per cent of aggregate non-food credit extended by all SCBs. Year-on-year, non-food bank credit expanded by 18.8 per cent as of the period concluding August 31, 2026, in contrast to 10.2 per cent during the corresponding fortnight of the prior year, specifically September 5, 2025.

Agricultural and related activities saw credit expand 17.2 per cent year-over-year, compared to 7.6 per cent in the same period of the prior year.

Aggregate credit extended to industries demonstrated a year-on-year expansion of 18.2 per cent (7.0 per cent in the corresponding fortnight of the previous year). Credit disbursements to ‘large’ and ‘medium’ industrial segments advanced at a faster rate, while ‘micro and small’ industries maintained consistent growth. Disbursal of credit to the ‘infrastructure’, ‘all engineering’, ‘basic metal and metal products’, ‘chemical and chemical products’, ‘food processing’, ‘textiles’, ‘construction’ and ‘petroleum, coal products and nuclear fuels’ sectors registered robust year-on-year growth.

Credit to the services sector demonstrated a year-over-year expansion of 24.3 per cent (10.3 per cent in the corresponding fortnight of the previous year), propelled by substantial gains in areas including ‘non-banking financial companies’ (NBFCs), ‘trade’, ‘professional services’, and ‘commercial real estate’.

Credit to the personal loans segment posted a year-over-year growth of 16.9 per cent, compared with 11.9 per cent a year prior. While segments such as ‘housing’ and ‘vehicle loans’ maintained double-digit growth rates, ‘credit card outstanding’ and ‘loans against gold jewellery’ exhibited a deceleration.
